Chapter 1 - Continuos Gas Lift definition and fundamentals

The continuous Gas Lift (CGL) is an artificial lift system that consists on the gas injection into the tubing through a downhole GL valve specially designed and located for this purpose. The lift gas must be pressurized to displace the liquids from the casing and allow to overcome the tubing backpressure at the deepest possible injection point. At surface the formation and lift gas are separated from liquids, then compressed where a portion is reinjeted to the GL wells and the remaining is used for other purposes or sold. The CGL has been used for many decades and commonly used in many fields worldwide; However, there are some conceptual and operational aspects that are not clearly understood and require a detailed review to ensure proper application of this method.
